SPACE DEFENCE

THROUGH BALLS + SWEEPING

CROSSES

CUT-BACKS

Space Defence develops confidence and calls for good judgement and decision making.

The goalkeepers that come out to claim a cross or punch to safety are the ones that install masses of confidence in their teams.

Space Defence asks goalkeepers to be decisive and brave in different moments, that can often be pivotal to the outcome of the game.

Development of this part of your game can be hard but comes quickly when working in a group of goalkeepers, all striving for the same outcome.

The difficulty of replicating an in-game situation during non-specialised goalkeeper training can make Space Defence one of the harder parts of the game to improve alone.

The Space Defence skill has a number of elements that are all critical to the success of any goalkeeper.

STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE

BANNER

East Coast Bays AFC hosted an historic first game under the lights at Bay City Park. After going 0-1 down to Onehunga Mangere, Louie saves a penalty and East Coast Bays win 4-1.

Louie claims a cross in his first season playing for East Coast Bays vs. Manurewa. The 2022 season, saw East Coast Bays narrowly miss out on promotion with the season being cut short due to lockdown.

IMAGE 3

Playing for Onehunga Sports vs. Eastern Suburbs AFC in the final game of the season, Louie punches a corner clear. Surprisingly (to some), Louie scores a free kick in this fixture ending 1-0 to Onehunga Sports. Results elsewhere meant that North Shore United would lift the Premier League trophy on the final day instead of Onehunga.
